With profound sadness we announce the passing of Herbert W. Carter, age 82, our beloved father, who left us peacefully on July 28, 2024. Herb was born to Russell R. Carter and Ann J. Carter (Gould) on December 10, 1941 in Somerville, MA. The family later moved to New Hampshire where Herb grew up in the Manchester, NH area.
Herb lived a life marked by passion, strength, and adventure. While attending the University of New Hampshire Herb sought out his passion for flying. He learned to fly and built his flight hours and ratings by flying the U.S mail service from Concord, NH to Boston, MA with Fern’s Flying Service. This led to his distinguished career as an airline pilot where he spent over 35 years soaring through the skies, allowing him to travel to many destinations around the world. Flying for Northeast Airlines & Trans Caribbean Airlines led him to a 30 year career with American Airlines flying many types of aircraft, the Boeing 727 being his favorite. His skill, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and created many lifelong friendships.
Beyond his achievements in flying, his iron-willed personality also contributed to him being a successful businessman in real estate, owning and managing many properties around the state throughout his lifetime.
During his off time and in retirement, Herb enjoyed spending summers at his camp on Merrymeeting Lake, in New Durham, NH, playing golf with friends and family and watching FOX News. He was also a passionate dog lover, Herb shared his life with several loyal canine companions who brought him immense joy and comfort. His love for dogs was evident in the care and affection he showed them, it was often said that his furry friends were his co-pilots in life.
He is survived by his biggest achievements, his five children, Sharon Carter, Lori Runyon-Carter (Ryan Runyon), Cindy Woodward (David Woodward), Brian Carter (Elaine Carter), Brett Carter, his nine grandchildren, Crystal Hubkey, Brianna Pogroszewski, Tanya Carter Maldonado, Brett Carter, Michael Carter, Justin Carter, Matthew Carter, Kyle Woodward, and Connor Woodward, and his four great-grandchildren, Brayden, Brody, Ameslee, and Hudson. He also leaves behind his beloved friend, Dawn Bavaro and his yellow lab, Libby.
In honor of Herb’s wishes, a private service for family will be held.
During Bykowski & Young Funeral Home in Manchester, NH is assisting the family with arrangements.
Our father will be remembered as the pillar of strength for our family, his witty sense of humor and his remarkable journey through life. He has now taken his final flight, soaring to new heights and will forever remain in our hearts.
